Handmade

Our BF@ Rawhide DENTAL chews are made from the inner digestible layer of the skin of free-roaming cattle from Brazil. These skins are a byproduct of meat production for human consumption. The skins are mechanically split after slaughter. The tough, indigestible outer layer (which is used for leather products) is removed in the process. The soft, fully digestible inner layer is then thoroughly washed and cut into the desired pieces. After being folded manually into various shapes, the rawhide chews are dried on racks for several days, after which they become hard and firm. Because it is a natural product, the rawhide chews may differ slightly in size and color. The color also depends heavily on which part of the cattle skin is used. Cowhide from the head is often a bit darker.

Collagen

Rawhide is made from the inner layer of the cattle skin. This digestible skin layer naturally consists mainly of collagen protein. Collagen is the most important structural protein for dogs and is essential for their vitality. Because natural production decreases with age, extra collagen helps keep joints, cartilage, and tendons supple and strong. In addition, it nourishes the hair follicles and strengthens the skin barrier, which results in a healthy, shiny coat and less itching. From the inside, the protein supports a healthy intestinal wall and digestion. Finally, it has a direct benefit for the teeth: while chewing on collagen-rich snacks, the protein actively dissolves plaque through saliva and prevents tartar.

PLEASE NOTE: However, there are major differences between "rawhide" from Asia (B/C quality) and BF® Rawhide DENTAL from South America (A quality). Much of the chewing material sold under the name rawhide is brown(ish) in color and has a glassy appearance. This often comes from Asia, where cheaper drying methods, coatings, and flavorings (such as sugar syrup, glycerin, or flavorings like beef or chicken) are used. These substances dry into a hard, glassy layer. Although this does not make the product any healthier, it does make chewing more appealing. For many people, the lower price of these products is also attractive. Choose quality and avoid cheap products that end up costing more. Read here for more info on the major differences.
