Het belang van omega 3 en 6 vetzuren voor hond en kat

The importance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for dogs and cats

Good nutrition forms the basis for the well-being of our pets. One aspect that is often underestimated is the right balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in their diet. BF®Petfood attaches great importance to an optimal ratio of these essential fatty acids to support the health and vitality of dogs and cats. They are called essential because dogs and cats, like humans, cannot produce them themselves. Your dog or cat must therefore obtain them through their diet. It is not only important that your dog or cat gets enough of each of these fatty acids, but also that they are in balance with each other. If this does not happen, it can cause problems.

What are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids?

Omega-3 and omega-6 are polyunsaturated fatty acids that play a key role in numerous bodily processes in pets. The most important essential omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Omega-6 fatty acids include linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA) – with AA being particularly essential for cats. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) can be produced from LA, but this process is not always efficient, which is why GLA can also be considered semi-essential. EPA and DHA are mainly found in fish, shellfish, and algae. ALA and LA are found in vegetable oils (such as corn and sunflower oil), AA in animal fat, and GLA in sources such as hemp seed, blackcurrant, borage, and evening primrose. Omega-3 fatty acids (especially EPA and DHA) have proven anti-inflammatory properties and support various health aspects.

Important indications are:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Skin problems with e.g., itching and inflammation
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart problems
  • Mental and neurological support (also for puppies and kittens!)

Omega-6 fatty acids are crucial for a healthy skin barrier. A deficiency leads to a dull coat, flaky skin, and increased sensitivity to infections. For cats, AA is also important for reproduction. An excess of certain omega-6 fatty acids (especially LA and AA) can actually promote inflammation, whereas GLA behaves more anti-inflammatorily, similar to omega-3.

What is the difference between vegetable oils and salmon oil?

Vegetable oils (such as linseed oil, rapeseed oil, hemp seed oil) mainly contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). This is a short-chain omega-3 fatty acid, an essential fatty acid (the body cannot make it itself) but is often considered "inactive" because the body must first convert it into the truly active forms: EPA and DHA.

Salmon oil (fish oil and algae oil) directly contains the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These are the biologically active forms that provide the most health benefits (anti-inflammatory, skin/coat, joints, brain, heart, etc.).

How well do dogs and cats convert ALA to EPA/DHA?

The conversion is very limited:

  • In dogs: Conversion of ALA to EPA is usually 1–10%, and to DHA much lower (often <1% or almost zero).
  • In cats: Even worse, almost zero. Cats have very little activity of the enzyme delta-6 desaturase, which is required for the first step in the conversion. They can practically make no EPA or DHA from ALA.

Therefore, many veterinary sources state that vegetable oils are not a good alternative if you really want to increase EPA and DHA in blood and tissues. Studies show that ALA supplementation mainly increases ALA levels in the blood, but hardly EPA or DHA. For real therapeutic effects (shiny coat, joint support), salmon oil (fish oil or algae oil) is much more efficient because it directly supplies EPA and DHA. You do not need to give large amounts to see an effect.

Benefits of a good balance between omega-3 and omega-6

  • Healthy skin and coat: Omega-3 fatty acids help with a shiny coat and strong, healthy skin.
  • Joint health: The anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3 supports the maintenance of flexible and healthy joints.
  • Brain development and cognitive function: DHA is essential for the development of the brain and cognitive skills, especially in puppies and kittens.
  • Immune support: Omega-6 fatty acids contribute to a strong immune system.

Why balance is so crucial

A balanced ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 is essential to prevent inflammation and promote overall health. Many commercial diets already contain high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, which often disturbs the balance. One therefore aims for an omega-6 : omega-3 ratio between 1:1 and 5:1 (or in broader guidelines up to a maximum of 10:1 or even 30:1 as a safe upper limit, depending on the source). An excessive omega-6 dominance can lead to chronic inflammation, skin problems, and a weakened immune system. BF®Petfood ensures that its nutritional formulas contain a careful balance of these fatty acids, tailored to the needs of dogs and cats.

The BF®Petfood approach

BF®Petfood is committed to pet food that is not only tasty but also fully meets the nutritional needs of dogs and cats. By using high-quality, natural ingredients – such as Scottish salmon and Scottish salmon oil for the right balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids – we strive for a perfectly balanced diet.

As a family business, we have consciously chosen pure salmon oil, which comes from wild Scottish salmon intended for human consumption. This flavorful wild salmon is strictly checked after being caught for unwanted substances such as heavy metals, PCBs, and dioxins. Our Scottish partner oversees all aspects of production, from catch to shipment, and holds PGI accreditation. The most important omega-3 fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are abundant in fatty cold-water fish such as wild salmon. The cold pressing of Scottish wild salmon takes place at a low temperature, ensuring that the nutritional values in the salmon oil are preserved and provide optimal effectiveness. This also creates a highly concentrated salmon oil, meaning the dosage is smaller than with non-cold-pressed salmon and fish oils.

By prioritizing the right ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, BF®Petfood's premium dog and cat food and Omega+ supplements contribute to the nutrients that pets need for a vital and happy life. Choosing BF®Petfood is a conscious step toward the long-term health and well-being of your beloved four-legged friend.
