The misconception that grains are useless fillers.
Many opinions circulate on the internet regarding dog and cat nutrition, with the topic of grains often being raised. A common idea is that grains like wheat, corn, and rice are merely cheap fillers that manufacturers add because dogs and cats supposedly cannot digest them. It is also often claimed that grains lead to obesity, diabetes, and allergies. These claims are striking, especially since it would be strange for a non-digestible substance to cause weight gain. It is therefore useful to set the facts straight. Research shows that dogs digest grains almost 100%, and cats 90-95%. Grains are therefore a valuable energy source for both animals. The term 'useless filler' is therefore unjustified.
Does it lead to weight gain after all?
This idea is not entirely accurate. Obesity is caused by an excessive total food intake, not by one specific ingredient. For a domestic dog that is gaining weight, it helps to reduce the amount of food (including snacks) and provide more exercise. In the case of diabetes, a lack of activity often plays a role. For animals with this condition, it may be better to limit fast carbohydrates from wheat or rice. Grain allergies do occur in dogs and cats, but other ingredients cause them more frequently. Wheat is in the top 10 allergy triggers, but almost 80% of that list consists of animal products such as beef, chicken, or lamb. Low-gluten grains such as corn and rice rarely lead to allergies. Why are grains used then? In addition to energy, they provide fiber, minerals such as manganese, and B vitamins. In short, there is no reason to avoid grains unless there is a specific reason to do so (e.g., an allergy).
