Hoe bewaar je brokken, vleesvoeding en natvoer het beste?

What is the best way to store kibble, raw food, and wet food?

Oxygen, moisture, and light can be a major reason why dogs and cats leave their food, especially if the food is not stored optimally. It is not a matter of "boredom" or "difficult behavior," but usually a signal that the food in front of them has already become less fresh and less appealing.

Dry food

Do you want to keep the dry food for your dog or cat as fresh and nutritious as possible? A good food container (or airtight storage box) really makes a big difference. Below, we provide handy tips for storing kibble optimally.

Shelf life

Our BF® dry food products are guaranteed to stay fresh for 18 months after production when kept in their original sealed packaging. Thanks to the airtight and low-oxygen packaging technique, the ingredients remain protected, the nutritional value is maintained, and the food tastes fresh and appealing for longer.

Why is proper storage after opening so important?

As soon as the bag is opened, the food comes into contact with oxygen, moisture, and light. This can slowly degrade the taste, smell, and nutrients. Therefore, always store opened kibble in an airtight container, in a cool, dry, and dark place – ideally in an airtight food bin or storage box.

Our tip for extra freshness

Do not pour the kibble loose into the container, but keep it in the original bag. Fold or roll the bag shut tightly (e.g., using a food clip) and place it in the container that way. This minimizes contact with air. A handy extra trick: scoop a portion for a week or two into a smaller airtight container. Refill it from the large container when it gets empty. This way, the main supply is opened less frequently, keeping everything extra fresh.

What should you look for in a good food container?

  • Must be airtight and sealable.
  • Rounded corners and a smooth surface, so it is easy to clean.
  • No gaps, cracks, or damage where dirt or pests can crawl in.
  • Place it in a cool, dry location, far from heat sources such as radiators or direct sunlight.
  • BPA-free and 100% food-safe.

Choose wisely: quality and safety

Not all plastic is suitable for food storage. Opt for a food-safe, sturdy container without harmful substances (BPA-free, etc.) and preferably 100% recyclable. This way, you combine convenience with sustainability. Our premium 45L food container is BPA-free and 100% food-safe and ideal for dry storage of approximately 20 kg of dog or cat kibble. You no longer need to struggle with large bags; you can place them, contents and all, into this specially designed, spacious food container that seals airtight and should be kept in a cool, dry, and dark place.

Did you know that...?

Many dogs and cats leave food because it has become slightly spoiled due to poor storage – the smell and taste are then less appealing. Is your pet a picky eater? Check the storage conditions and the expiration date first. A day past the date is usually not a disaster, but the quality and nutritional value are no longer optimally guaranteed. Important: never mix old kibble with new kibble.

Meat food?

Our complete meat meals for dogs are best stored in a cool, dry place and served at room temperature. Once opened, 800g rolls and 90g portion sausages are best kept sealed in the refrigerator. They will remain fresh for about 3 days. You can also cut the meat food into portions and freeze them. To thaw, we recommend placing the portions in the refrigerator before serving. For variety, please see our other raw meat/fish meal recipes.

And wet food?

Once opened, wet food can be kept in the refrigerator for 2 days. Serve at room temperature – cats prefer not to eat it (too) cold. You can give our complete wet food meals as a full main meal, but also as a tasty change of pace alongside kibble.

Bag or can empty? How to recycle sustainably

Our BF® “No waste” packaging is made of mono-material (plastic, cardboard, or metal) and is fully recyclable. BF® was the first in the Netherlands and the Benelux to introduce natural/organic pet food in recyclable packaging. Our PMD (Plastic, Metal, Drink cartons) packaging generally belongs in the PMD waste bin. However, please note: some municipalities use post-separation. In those areas, you can simply put PMD in with your residual waste (grey bin/bag). The waste processor will machine-sort the recyclable material – often even more efficiently than with home separation. Important update: regions will transition to post-separation by July 1, 2026. From that moment, PMD may be disposed of as residual waste there, and it will still be recycled. Not sure about the rules in your area? Always check the 'Afvalscheidingswijzer' (Waste Separation Guide) from Milieu Centraal (enter your postal code at https://www.afvalscheidingswijzer.nl) or your municipality's waste app/website. That way, you always do it right.

P.S. Always ensure plenty of fresh drinking water.
