Summer tips to keep your cat or dog cool and comfortable
On hot summer days, our dogs and cats need extra attention. On warm summer days, we can adjust our clothing and put on shorts and a thin T-shirt. However, our beloved cats and dogs have a furry coat that they wear all year round. This can cause health problems on hot days. Cats do not sweat through their skin like we do, but mainly through their paws. They also cool down by licking themselves extensively. Dogs pant to get rid of heat, but that takes a lot of energy and can tire them out faster.
Here are some tips and tricks to keep your cat and dog cool and comfortable during the hot summer months:
1. Water
Ensure your pet always has plenty of fresh water available. Place multiple water bowls around the house and garden. Some cats prefer to drink from a higher bowl on the windowsill. With a drinking fountain, you can add ice cubes so the water stays cool longer. Regularly refreshed water is also essential for dogs, especially after playing.
2. Shade
Provide enough shaded spots where your cat or dog can take a nap. Cats like to lie on cool tiles. Create a nice shady spot on a tiled floor. If you lack a balcony or garden, turn windowsills into a safe, comfortable place to watch and lie down.
3. Ventilate
Open windows for a gentle breeze or use a fan. Place frozen bottles of water in front of the fan for extra cool air. Darken the rooms during the day so that the heat stays out as much as possible. Long-haired cats and dogs benefit extra from a cool breeze through their coat.
4. A cool sleeping spot
Freeze a bottle of water, wrap a towel around it, and place it in the basket or crate. Elevate the bed so that air can circulate underneath. This works excellently for both cats and dogs.
5. Refreshing treats
Make a cat popsicle by freezing water, unsalted broth, or wet food (let it thaw slightly before giving it). Fill a lick mat with wet food and freeze it. Dogs often love frozen broth popsicles or wet chew toys.
6. Stroke with a damp cloth
Moisten a washcloth with lukewarm water and stroke gently over the fur. Many cats and dogs find this pleasant because it resembles their own grooming behavior. Do not force it if your pet does not like it.
7. Cooling mat or wet towel
A cooling mat is one of the best and most commonly used solutions in the summer: it cools naturally and stays cool for a long time without risks. A damp (not soaking wet) towel with lukewarm water can also help, as it resembles the natural licking behavior of cats and provides cooling through evaporation. Do not use ice-cold water and do not force anything if your pet does not like it. Combine preferably with shade, ventilation, and plenty of fresh water for the best result.
8. Grooming
Brush the coat thoroughly every day. A clean, tangle-free coat helps with heat dissipation. For long-haired animals, you could consider having the coat trimmed slightly shorter (always consult a groomer or veterinarian first). Pay extra attention to white or light-colored animals due to sensitive skin.
9. Adjusting diet
Offer smaller portions of wet food more often in the summer for your cat but also for your dog. Add some extra water or broth for more fluid intake. Do not give large meals during the hottest part of the day and ensure the food does not warm up too quickly.

Extra attention for dogs
Dogs can become overheated more quickly during walks. Avoid hot asphalt, walk early in the morning or late in the evening, and watch out for panting, restlessness, or lethargy.
